The thought of being the first one in my immediate family to graduate college pushed me to get through university.The news that our ceremony was cancelled came a week after our university announced it was transitioning to.

As the oldest of seven siblings and the daughter of a teenage parent, going to college in the first place felt like I was defying the odds. It wasn’t just about my education. “It did bum me out more than I thought it was going to. It kind of hit me this week that wow, this is not happening,” Samantha Delvalle-Trinh, a senior at Harrisburg University in Pennsylvania, told. “Your entire college career you think about graduation. It’s your motivation to be done.” Though she’s not a first-generation herself, Johnna Thompson was the first in her immediate family to earn her master’s degree.
