Elkanah Kibet, a 2:09 marathoner, is making his third appearance on Team USA. This one means more.

It’s the third time Kibet has made a Worlds team. He also ran the marathon in 2017 in London, finishing 16th, and 2019 in Doha, Qatar, where he finished 38th in the sweltering heat while he was in Officer Candidate School. USA Track & Field implemented a new selection system for the 2022 Worlds after a pandemic-shortened qualification period. Instead of relying on a descending order time list, they’d pick marathoners who were top 10 at the 2021 Olympics and then take the next two selections based on place at the 2021 Chicago, Boston, and New York City Marathons. Unfortunately for many runners, those criteria were announced after the Chicago and Boston marathons had already happened.
He says his training has been consistent in the past year or so and he’s not doing so much running that he’s exhausted heading into races. Instead, he relies on staple workouts, like mile repeats. He’ll do seven of them, at about 4:45 pace, at 7,000 feet in Colorado Springs, with a 200-meter jog between each. Haron Lagat, a marathoner and steeplechaser who was also part of WCAP, holds the stopwatch and occasionally joins him for some of the easier miles.
