To resist the urge to stop halfway.Some remain understandably skeptical. For almost every year of their half-century existence, the Spurs have been synonymous with winning. They’ve won more often than any team in the NBA. And now they’re just going to change who they are?
He’s a once-in-a generation talent, the kind not seen since LeBron James was in high school. He’s the reason NBA executives and scouts barely bothered to hide their awe when they watched him play two exhibition games in Nevada this month, prompting what some are calling an unprecedented “race to the bottom” this season.
Looking around the league during opening week, a strong case can be made that the Spurs are one of at least five teams — joining Oklahoma City, Utah, Houston and Indiana — who clearly aren’t trying to win this season. Orlando, Detroit and Charlotte — the Spurs’ first opponent — might jump into the fray at some point. And eventually there will be others who decide that any shot at Wembanyama or Henderson is better than pursuing a spot in the play-in tournament.
