After an injury plagued 2022-23, the up-and-coming Spurs swingman is eligible for a contract extension this offseason
Spurs guard Devin Vassell entered his third NBA season with high hopes of taking a quantum leap forward in his still fledgling career.“I feel like I showed flashes,” Vassell said. “I showed when I’m healthy I can play with the best of them.”
“This offseason is going to be big for me, just going through my plan and making sure I’m healthy so I don’t have to go through this ever again,” Vassell said after sitting out the Spurs’ season-ending victory at Dallas on Sunday. “I don’t want to play half a season or sit or not play back-to-backs and do what I had to do this year.”pick in the 2020 NBA draft, Vassell is entering the final season of his rookie-scale contract in 2023-24.
He was averaging nearly 20 points per game before his surgery, having emerged as one of the NBA’s most feared pull-up jump shooters. Having set a preseason goal of becoming more of a playmaker, Vassell averaged 3.6 assists, also a career best. It is clear the Spurs believe in Vassell, even if his 171 career games represent a relatively small sample size for a three-year pro.
