Following a national trend, many fill generation gaps as primary caregivers to their grandkids; a nonprofit group offers support and guidance
Paradise Hills residents Shearl and Clifford Lambert have been blessed with a large family made up of eight children, 37 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
But the judge assigned to their case — the now-retired Judge Susan D. Huguenor — had other plans for the family. The Lamberts were granted guardianship, and the county courthouse collected funds to help them find a new place to live, and Huguenor inspired the couple to work toward a new mission.“She told us to go out and find other grandparents like ourselves and teach them that these children are blessings, not curses,” Shearl recalled.
Raising a new generation of children in one’s older adult years can be physically challenging, with routines such as carrying kids up to bed or playing with them in a park. Before she was a mother, Barbara Rogers-Godine broke her neck and was recovering in the hospital when she was administered OxyContin to numb the pain. She soon became addicted to the powerful prescription opioid painkiller, and when she was taken off of it, she started using street drugs: first phencyclidine, which is commonly known as PCP or angel dust, then cocaine.Billye Dubra and her husband Bill Dubra find support during the Grandparents Connection group meeting.
