Holidaymakers are warned of 'very strong tides and currents' at Cape Verde

Brits holidaying in the islands of Cape Verde have been warned of ‘unpredictable’ waves and ‘very strong tides and currents’ when swimming in the sea. The UK Foreign Office has issued guidance for swimming at the island’s beaches.

The Cape Verde islands are situated off the coast of Senegal in the Atlantic Ocean. As a result of their location they can experience harsh coastal conditions, despite having beautiful beaches which look enticing to visitors. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office warns Brits to only swim where there is a lifeguard on duty. Bathers should follow warning flags which determine whether it’s safe to swim or not as you could get caught out by unseen currents and undertowsIn an update to its travel advice for the country, the FCDO said: “If you are going into the water, always use beaches where there is a lifeguard on duty. Tides and currents around the islands are very strong.

“Take care when walking close to the water’s edge, especially along unsupervised stretches of beach. Waves can be unpredictable and have a strong undertow.”According to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, more than 62 British nationals drowned abroad in 2022.

The society advises those with children to make sure they are constantly supervised and within arm’s reach. Swimmers are urged to stick in pairs or groups and choose a lifeguarded venue wherever possible.
