a Ukrainian-Dutch coproduction from filmmaker Anna Buryachkova, is set to debut next week in Venice’s Orizzonti Extra sidebar. Today, we can share the first trailer for the pic.
Set in the late 90s Kyiv, the pic is a story of the young and rebellious amid the ruins of the Soviet regime. Synopsis reads: After transferring from a downtown high school, Tonia befriends a group of badass youngsters, trying to find protection from her past and a place she truly belongs. They spend time together, roaming around Kyiv’s post-socialist suburbs, having fun, and getting in trouble. Soon, Tonia falls in love with Zhurik .
Buryachkova was born in 1982 in Kyiv. While in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, she started writing the script fordirector Marina Stepanska. Principal photography was completed in Kyiv just two months before the city faced the Russian full-scale war against Ukraine. “We were working on the rough cut with my editor, Yurii Reznichenko when the war began, and obviously, we stopped. I fled the country, and Yurii stayed. With the help of people in three different countries, producer Natalia Libet managed to get a copy of the material to Amsterdam,” Buryachkova said. “For a few months, it felt like there was no solid reason to keep working. We were stressed, and nothing mattered apart from what was happening in our lives and our country.
Buryachkova added: “When the Soviet state failed, we were suddenly faced with the freedom we had imagined for a long time. Our parents got lost in it, and so did we. On top of that, the film industry in Ukraine was non-existent back then, so everything we were watching came from the West. I truly wanted to make a film about us and our way of living through life-changing events to show universal stories through our eyes. I guess it was a common idea for many 20th-century kids to find love.
