A winter Mediterranean cruise is perfect for the culturally greedy who’ll have sites all to themselves ⛴️ With some costing less than £50 per day
It’s not cold either; in Greece it hits 22°C, a full 24°C warmer than my native Edinburgh when I risk a call home. I’m writing this in December on my balcony in a T-shirt.
Med cruises at any time work well for people who think they wouldn’t like cruising. You’ve got a comfy hotel room as a base for a series of city and island breaks. No checking in and out, no stress – just a new place to explore every day. And now all gloriously quiet in winter. If you want to see your favourite painting in a gallery, or enjoy a romantic moment returning to the fountain you got engaged at, winter is the time to cruise.
On two previous visits I remember crowds and it being hard to take photos without getting tourist arms and legs in. Today it’s just Roman and Greek stone limbs I’m photographing.Turning west we ease on to Crete. A favourite beach destination, in winter it is still shorts and T-shirts weather. I dine off-ship solo on boat-fresh squid stuffed with feta, jealously watching a couple swimming.
We find Italy’s boot now. I opt for one of the included half-day trips that open up Sicily’s port city of Messina. There are paid excursions, too. I splash out on one the next day as I’m intrigued by the surreal combo promised of “Pompeii and Pizza”.
