Former Celtic midfielder Landry Nguemo has tragically passed away following a car accident in his native Cameroon.
The incident occurred in Ngomo, near the city of Bafoussam, and the Cameroonian Football Association have now confirmed his passing at the age of 38. Their statement read: "The Cameroonian Football Federation has just learned the tragic news of the passing of former Indomitable Lion Landry Nguemo in a traffic accident.
After being spotted by scouts, of French side Nancy, Nguemo made the move to Europe at the age of 15 in 2001. The midfielder broke into the first team four years later, and would go onto make 148 appearances in total for the club, scoring four goals and helping them win the League Cup in 2006. Three years later, Nguemo was brought to Celtic Park on a season-long loan deal by Tony Mowbray, and was given the number six shirt that had previously been worn by former Hoops and Guinea star Bobo Balde.
In his lone season in the east end of Glasgow, Nguemo - who won 46 caps for his country and appeared at three World Cups - made 34 outings for the Hoops. The defensive midfielder later enjoyed spells with Ligue 1 sides Bordeaux and Saint Etienne, before stints further afield with Turkish duo Akhisarspor and Kayserispor before hanging up his boots with Danish club Kongsvinger in 2019.
In May 2020, the ex Cameroon star started his coaching career as manager of French minnows COS Villers-les-Nancy, and at the time of his death was working as a coach in former club Nancy's youth academy.
