Early Facebook employees, some of whom wrote the company's first community guidelines, released an open letter Wednesday criticizing CEO Mark Zuckerberg's inaction regarding posts from President Trump that are inaccurate or glorify violence, calling for company leadership to begin fact-checking politicians and labeling harmful posts.Expression" in Washington, DC on October 17, 2019.
Twitter earned the ire of President Trump last week when it began to fact-check his inaccurate tweets and added warnings to his messages of violence, including the threat to shoot looters amid protests following the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd while being arrested by Minneapolis police. While Zuckerberg previously claimed it wouldn't allow content that"incites violence or risks imminent harm" on Facebook, he's refused to take any action in response to Trump's posts.
The former employees, which included Facebook's first chief communications officer, said Facebook"claims that providing warnings about a politician’s speech is inappropriate, but removing content from citizens is acceptable, even if both are saying the same thing."where Zuckerberg admitted the company's inaction likely hurt the company, though attending employees told The Verge,"No one thinks he gave a single real answer.
