The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly signing former Ohio State punter Cameron Johnston.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly signed punter Cameron Johnston, bringing the native Australian to the Steel City. Johnston’s deal with the Steelers is worth $9 million over three years, per The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov.Johnston's built a reputation as a reliable field-position changer in his six NFL seasons thus far. For his career, he averages 47.3 yards per punt and nets 42.2 yards per boot. He's had 182 punts that pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line, an average of 30.
He led the league in total punt yards with the Houston Texans in 2021, but his best season numbers-wise is arguably his succeeding 2022 campaign when he averaged a career-best 48.1 yards per punt and landed a career-high 37 punts downed inside the 20. For his NFL tenure, Johnston has seen 40.9% of his boots downed inside the 20 with just 6.3% reaching the end zone for touchbacks.
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018, Johnston spent three seasons in Philly before landing in Houston for another three years. Before his professional tenure, Johnston spent four seasons as Ohio State's starting punter from 2013-16, averaging 44.9 yards per punt and serving as the booter for the Buckeyes' 2014 national championship team.
