HUNTINGTON, West Virginia — The former superintendent of a school district in the Columbus area is facing two charges of kidnapping after police say he lured two young children into his vehicle, offering them money to baby-sit.
William J. Morrison III, 59, of Huntington, was arrested last week in connection with the incident that occurred on Aug. 17, according to police. Morrison is being held in jail and could face more charges in the future, reports say., a 9-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl say a man in a Subaru Forester approached them and convinced them to get into the vehicle by offering each of them $20 to baby-sit his 4-year-old daughter. The driver later was identified as Morrison.
After driving a short distance, Morrison stopped and asked the boy to get out and check one of the vehicle’s tires. When the boy got out, Morrison drove off with the girl still inside the car,Reports say the girl became scared, so Morrison increased his offer to $100. The girl eventually was able to open a door and get out of the vehicle, reports say. There were no injuries.
According to WBNS, Morrison was the superintendent for Hamilton Local School District in Columbus but was fired in 2017 after police found a suspected crack pipe and crack rock in his vehicle during a traffic stop. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 176 suspended, after pleading guilty to drug-related charges, WBNS reports.
