Raymond Cook and Mark Bedford both deny perjury offences

Two former Strangeways officers allegedly gave false information during the inquest into the death of a man in custody, prosecutors allege.

Raymond Cook, 36, and Mark Bedford, 50, were each serving prison officers in the segregation unit at the time that Mr Ahmed was taken to the unit, at the time he died, prosecutors said. Mr Cook was directly involved in the restraint and Mr Bedford was a witness to aspects of it, and responsible for the log relating to it, it was said.

He was taken under escort to the segregation unit, before Mr Cook and another officer went into the cell to undertake a search of him. It was during this an incident occurred and Mr Ahmed was restrained prone on the ground, prosecutors said. In the Annex A document, Mr Cook said: "Mr Ahmed seemed hot and sweaty. I heard from the escorting staff that he had been running around the yard. It was also confirmed he had received a parcel which he had swallowed.”

In his evidence, he said that Mr Ahmed came to a stop before turning 45 degrees, whilst Mr Cook was still continuing forward and said he 'anticipated' Mr Ahmed was going to assault him. "Well I put my hands up to protect himself, because I thought I was going to be hit and I just remembered grabbing his arm as we talked to immobilise the limb, so we don’t get injured," he said.

Asked how Mr Ahmed came to be on the ground, he said: “The group was going down, at the time I presumed it was the way they were taking him to gain control of him,” but he added that he had not used force to take Mr Ahmed down, and did not know how he had come to be there. "Officer Cook initiated a restraint. This is exactly what I would have done as I thought Mr Ahmed had turned to ‘have a go’ at the officers who were in the doorway of the cell. I thought he was going to attack or assault us in some way as there was no reason for him to walk back towards us after he had turned around in the cell.

He denied mentioning the '45 degree angle' because Mr Cook had previously mentioned it in court. He did accept he had been in court the days that Mr Cook was giving evidence, jurors heard.
