Transferring to UIW following a redshirt year at Auburn, former Texas A&M starter Zach Calzada took the first-team snaps in the Cardinals' spring game.

“I could’ve definitely stayed FBS. But the opportunity here is absolutely amazing,” Calzada said. “That’s what really brought me here, is the opportunity to go win a national championship, to win a Walter Payton Award, to put a school that’s rising, on the map.” For Calzada, who came to UIW to focus on football and replicate the uptick in production for the quarterbacks who preceded him, the lack of frills was not a concern.
But Calzada said he was also nursing injury late in the season, dislocating his left, nonthrowing shoulder three times through the year. He underwent postseason labrum surgery, but when he stepped into workouts at Auburn the following summer, he dislocated his shoulder again. He hoped to be ready to play in fall camp, but he said three or four further dislocations were a sign he needed to undergo another procedure in October.
