Fort Bend County’s first African American memorial will be erected in Kendleton’s historic Black cemetery after officials announced a $4 million initial investment to revitalize the park.

after officials announced a $4 million initial investment to revitalize the park that is home to the burial grounds.

The site is fitting, McCoy said, because Kendleton is one of the first freedmen’s towns in Texas. It was founded following the abolition of slavery and quickly became a prospering community. The memorial will be located inside the Juneteenth Plaza, which will also display information about the area’s Black history.“Within that Juneteenth Plaza there will be a significant monument to the African-American experience in Fort Bend County,” Hines explained. “There's a story about the African diaspora here, so within our design, there’s a story about perseverance and strength.

Olson in turn praised McCoy’s swift actions in working to secure funding to revamp the park. The two met during McCoy’s campaign when McCoy volunteered to help Olson clean the park. Several of his family members are interred at the cemetery, but the lifelong resident of Kendleton hasn’t been able to pay his respects to them in years as he’s no longer physically able to make the trek to their graves.
