Freelance reporter and late editorAt least four people are dead after the collapse of a two-storey restaurant in Majorca the popular resort this evening.
Several people are believed to be trapped following the incident, which happened at about 8.30pm local time at the premises, which is located by the beach in popular tourist resort of Palma de Mallorca. Local emergency services said that “it is confirmed that two people died” and that there are “around 12-14 injuries of different severity”.A regional emergency response coordination centre spokesperson said: “We have activated an emergency response as a result of the collapse of the ceiling of a two-storey building in Avenida Cartago in Playa de Palma, where people are trapped. Firefighters and local police are at the scene.
It is not known whether the deceased or injured are restaurant workers or holidaymakers and what their nationalities are. Palma de Mallorca’s mayor, Jaime Martínez, and deputy mayor, Javier Bonet, have arrived at the scene and are helping coordinate rescue efforts and provide support to the affected families, according to thePalma de Mallorca is the western Mediterranean island’s capital.
