‘That’s those spirits talking’: Freed slave’s descendants preserve 150-year-old ranch in Seguin

The Wilcox Moore family is preserving the Wilcox Ranch, the oldest and last African American working ranch in Jakes Colony, a Freedman’s Colony in Seguin.Former slave Henry Wilcox walked 12 miles from Seguin to Jakes Colony 150 years ago to buy 200 acres of land from a white landowner.
Mar’lon, Lola’s brother, wore the clothes of his forefathers: a denim shirt, ball cap and blue jeans atop the pull straps of brown leather boots. He’s caretaker of the cemetery, landowner and foreman of their family’s 152-year-old Wilcox Ranch. The three of them were children when they first tread upon their family’s historic graveyard and spent summers at the Seguin ranch. Now, they are the stewards of their ancestors’ legacy.
Henry Wilcox, born in 1833, was enslaved until emancipation, when he settled in Seguin. In 1870, he bought the land, where he went on to herd cattle and operated a farm with horses, pigs and chickens. He grew crops and fruit orchards in the sandy hill country. She said African Americans created intentional communities that included the anchor institutions — cemeteries, churches, schools and lodges.
