The influx of people making the journey has seen several migrants injured and even killed, while increasingly frequent clashes add to the disarray.
The mayor of a French village near the coastal town of Dunkirk issued an appeal for help as large numbers of migrants making the trek to Britain continue to arrive in the area, the Associated Press reported.
Franck Dhersin, the mayor who also works as a regional vice president for transportation, said that dozens more migrants arrive every day, AP reported. While voicing his appeal for aid, he said that people in the affected area"feel abandoned by the government" amid the"new influx of migrants." Many hundreds of people, setting off in a flotilla of boats, quickly ran into trouble in the waters between northern France and Britain. Hundreds more were intercepted on the British side. The waterway with changeable weather, cold seas and heavy maritime traffic is dangerous for the inflatables and other small boats that men, women and children squeeze into.
