Why Emily was written out of Friends so quickly
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Friends director James Burrows has revealed on-set difficulties with the Emily character that surprisingly mirror a behind-the-scenes problem from the making of Seinfeld. Burrows is a prolific TV director whose sitcom credits include episodes of Cheers, Taxi, Will & Grace, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and, of course, Friends.
The struggles that Friends went through during the Emily storyline have parallels with a similar struggle on the set of Seinfeld. Friends and Seinfeld are often compared to one another, but it’s usually because they’re both ensemble sitcoms about a group of pals getting up to wacky hijinks in New York, not because they shared similar behind-the-scenes problems.
Swedberg played George Costanza’s on-and-off girlfriend Susan Ross. When George and Susan became engaged in season 7, Swedberg became a much bigger presence on the show and George actor Jason Alexander struggled to get into a comedic rhythm with her. Alexander explained that he “couldn’t figure out how to play off of her,” because her comedic instincts were all over the place. Seinfeld’s problem with Susan is almost identical to Friends’ problem with Emily.
Why Emily Was Written Out Of Friends So Quickly Despite marrying one of the main characters, Emily’s stint on Friends only lasted for 14 episodes between seasons 4 and 5. Compare that to Paul Rudd’s Mike Hannigan, who was elevated to recurring role status and stuck around until the end of the series.
