Avril Pitt donated her breast milk in May 2022, at the peak of the infant formula milk shortage. Giving back is just part of who she is.

“That, honestly, just gutted me,” Pitt, 37, said. “As a mom, knowing that there’s a mom out there that needs milk.”Growing up in Nairobi, Kenya, where her mother taught her the importance of giving back, and where she said community and neighborliness prevail, this wasn’t Pitt’s first time responding to a crisis.
As a law student in Kenya, she volunteered to provide care for people living with HIV. When her aunt died of breast cancer, she donated breast tissue for research. But when she heard that potentially thousands of mothers would not be able to nourish their newborns, it “hit home” a little more. “There wasn't really much thinking that went into it,” Pitt said. “It was just that if I can make extra, I’m absolutely going to give to someone who needs it.”
