It’s a long story. When a date is confirmed, the grieving are suddenly asked to make decisions about so much that we normally ignore, disdain or suppress.
There are practical issues you can do nothing about: progress after a hospital death, for example, only begins with the call from a doctor there to confirm its cause. Then, the hospital contacts the local council to allow it to issue a death certificate and the crucial “green form” that the registrar will give you, to pass on in turn to the funeral directors, for a cremation or burial to take place.
What nothing can prepare you for are the emotional issues that the intensity of a combination of grief and deadlines throws up. Death forces us into thinking about extraordinary issues and dealing with unfamiliar individuals and institutions. Do you know definitively what you think about profound matters like life after death and whether you believe in God? Perhaps you have a firm faith, but if you do not, engaging with someone else’s faith can reignite many of these “big picture” questions. If you are lapsed or reject that faith, but the deceased was a devotee, this can be frustrating and upsetting.
