One of the many mementos late funny friend Phyllis Diller gave to my family are some paper “funny money” called “Dilly Dollars,” featuring a “sourpuss dill pickle” as the faux bills’ monetary main illustration image.
Diller, who died a decade ago at age 95 in August 2012, said the custom created silly bills were not only for fun promotional purpose, but also her way to always remember her own early money struggles from as far back as 1954 as a housewife and mother of five, and the wife of Sherwood Diller, her ne’er-do-well first husband who wasn’t fond of keeping jobs. A year later in 1955, at age 37, her life changed forever when her comedy career launched at the Purple Onion nightclub in San Francisco.
A favorite in Greek cuisine, dill is popular around the globe in many cultures and especially prized for soups, salad dressings, a fish garnish, and of course, brine for pickles. In Europe, it was an “Old World” remedy to serve up “a weak brewed dill tea” to fussy babies to relieve colic cough. My own Polish family has a preference for sweet pickles rather than dill, but our farm neighbors the Scamerhorns and the Eckerts have a dill preference.
