In the immediate aftermath of a funeral, it is the funeral director's duty to look after the ashes, but for several reasons sometimes they are not picked up
A Nottingham funeral home says it has more than 130 sets of unclaimed ashes dating back to the 1950s. A. W. Lymn has created an online public register with all of the cremated remains in its possession since before the year 2000.
These ashes include those of decorated veteran Air Commodore George Lawson CBE MC. Ashes not being collected has always been a big issue in the funeral industry, and it is estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of unclaimed urns sitting in funeral homes across the UK. Matthew Lymn Rose, a fifth-generation managing director at A. W. Lymn, said: “It’s a saddening thought to think of ashes that have been left uncollected, however there are many reasons why this might occur. Sometimes, in the aftermath of a funeral, people can be in denial and taking possession of the ashes can be a hard thing to do. In other instances, there is a breakdown in communication amongst a family as to who will collect them.
It is recommended by the National Association of Funeral Directors that ashes be stored for at least five years, during this time efforts should be made to locate the rightful recipient before a funeral company can dispose of them. This often includes scattering them in a garden of remembrance or at a beauty spot with landowners’ permission.
