Mad Max: Fury Road wasn't always going to be the huge success and instant classic that it became, and the original theatrical cut was much worse.
Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the most acclaimed action movies of the 2010s, but it almost ended up being one of the worst. The 2015 movie, directed by George Miller, is the fourth installment of the Mad Max series, but it's a great entry point for any series newcomer, as it doesn't follow on from the original Mel Gibson-led trilogy, and, if anything, it skews the Mad Max timeline even further.

While the violence isn't the primary reason why Mad Max: Fury Road was so successful and grossed $380 million worldwide , it certainly helped.
A PG-13 version of Mad Max: Fury Road could have worked, especially if Miller had already agreed to it before pre-production, but editing a PG-13 movie out of a movie clearly shot with the intention of it being R-rated would've significantly damaged the product. The Mad Max franchise is an established IP, but it isn't exactly a billion-dollar series, and audiences showed up to theaters due to the positive reception.
