The council is set to take full ownership of Salford Community Stadium, which is home to Sale Sharks and Salford Red Devils
Salford City Council took the decision to take full ownership of the site, formerly known as the AJ Bell Stadium, back in February. Now town hall bosses look set to complete the buyout from their equal partner Peel - pending an official decision from the council cabinet on September 3.
The stadium, home to Salford Red Devils and Sale Sharks, officially opened in 2012. It hosted the Rugby League World Cup in 2013 and will be one of the venues for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2025. “It’s about jobs and regenerating that part of the city, something we committed to all those years ago. We want to keep Salford Red Devils in the city and keep them in the Super League and generate revenue from the stadium.
The western gateway is a growth location site for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Mayor Andy Burnham, developing as part of Greater Manchester’s Devolution Trailblazer deal with the Government. Currently there is 26.53 acres of land, but two plots are already going through the process of being bought, the council confirmed. The other plots are earmarked for other commercial and retail development in the future.
The city mayor went on to admit that the speed of redevelopment has not been quick enough given the promises made to do so back in 2012. The ambition of this buyout is to speed up this regeneration which has only seen an Aldi and the Barley Farm pub in the last 10 years, he said.
