By 2024 Best Picture hopefuls will have to be inclusive in order to qualify for the coveted top prize

Oscar hopefuls will have to meet a new set of inclusive hiring standards in order to qualify for Best Picture, an effort the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hopes will lead to greater diversity and representation both onscreen and behind the scenes.

“We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry," Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement Tuesday. The new Academy regulations apply only to the Best Picture race right now. Categories such as Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, International Feature Film, Animated Short Film, and Live Action Short Film will be addressed at a later date.
