The Phillies' manager spent two years as the bench coach for the Giants' skipper.
He had filled the bench coach role for 10 seasons with the New York Yankees and another 2 1/2 in Philadelphia before Girardi was fired last June.
Kapler is a unique personality and he has an analytically-driven style to managing - neither of which Phillies fans ever embraced. Kapler removed Aaron Nola at 68 pitches with a 5-0 lead in the first game he managed and the the Phillies ended up losing to the Atlanta Braves, a game which still resonates with fans about Kapler’s two-year tenure where they contended twice but each time collapsed down the stretch.
“He tries to pull out all the stops all the time,” said Thomson of what he expected from Kapler in the series. “I learned a lot about the analytics side of the game from him. I always think you have to have a balance there, but that’s fine. He taught me a lot about that.” Thomson noted his job wasn’t any different with Kapler - who came into his Phillies tenure with minimal coaching experience - than with Girardi.
