We chat with TheFabelmans star Gabriel LaBelle about how he prepared for the role of a lifetime, playing young Steven Spielberg as he discovers family secrets and his own love of filmmaking:
The Fabelmans may be Steven Spielberg's most personal work yet, touching on his own childhood and detailing events that actually happened to him and his loved ones. Currently playing in select theaters and releasing widely on November 23, the film was co-written by Spielberg and acclaimed playwright Tony Kushner. Gabriel LaBelle portrays the teenage Sammy Fabelman, whose life echoes the director's as he navigates family secrets and a burgeoning passion for film.
Gabriel Labelle: It feels great. I wanted to talk to him as much as I could; to do a lot of Zooms with him and find out about his life and the relationships he had with his parents and his siblings. Then I got to watch a lot of his home movies that he filmed of his real family, and I could figure out how he walked and moved around. [I was] just researching his life with him, or outside of him in interviews and documentaries and his whole career; trying to just get as much of it as possible.
Aside from working with Steven, the cast is full of Hollywood icons and A-listers that you get to work with and learn from at a young point in your career. What is that experience like for you?
