“Let’s just name a couple hard truths,” Union-Wade told the crowd."First, the intersection of Black rights and the rights of the LGBTQIA trans and gender non-conforming people continues to be rough — that’s a huge understatement. Even as we demand equality at the top of our lungs, we consistently failed to extend our advocacy to protect some of our most vulnerable among us.”
Union-Wade and her husband former NBA star Dwyane Wade were honored with the NAACP's prestigious President's Award, and in their acceptance speech they spoke of their 15-year-old daughter, Zaya. "During a time when Texas has anti-trans bills making drag performances considered to be a “sexually oriented” action rather than artistic expression, her call to action was commendable, but I noticed the audience was shocked," Crawford Ross said.
