Reducing the debt means less money is going to bond holders on Bay Street and more money will stay in the pocketbooks of taxpayers. Alberta has also recently seen a credit rating upgrade due to its good fiscal decision making.

This year, the Saskatchewan government is projecting a $1.1-billion dollar surplus based on the latest fiscal update. That’s a $1.6-billion turnaround from last winter’s budget. From this, the government was able to pay down some debt and return money to taxpayers.Article content However, there is still more work to do if the government wants to put taxpayers first. In the past, the Saskatchewan government has failed to keep spending in check. This time around, Saskatchewan needs to take advantage of the opportunity it has been given and hold the line on spending.

And the government recently announced that it would be subsidizing WestJet to the tune of up to $2.2 million for only one route. It’s clear the government needs to cut back.
