The woman-owned, Black-owned Good Grades Dispensary combines legal, cultural, and botanical expertise in Jamaica, Queens.
The first legal adult-use cannabis dispensary in Queens in now open for business, and owners are taking on the current illegal marketplace with an obvious-yet-ingenious play from the legacy handbook: dime bags.
Opening today as a pop-up for public sales, Good Grades Dispensary in Jamaica is a woman-owned, Black-owned family business supported by the New York Social Equity Cannabis Investment Fund, and is the first Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary in New York City outside of Manhattan. Facing a massive, statewide marketplace of illegal storefronts selling cannabis , the business is also changing the game for legal weed in NYC by offering smaller, more affordable portions of cannabis flower to their customers.
Specifically, Good Grades’ wares will include “dime bags,” a.k.a. $10 servings, of a plant that many recreational users as well as patients are used to buying regularly inamounts — a large, traditional market sector that legal stores in the U.S. have struggled to court with their often-pricey pre-rolls and $70 eighths.
The move seems to be part of the business’ overall plan to help build an accessible legal marketplace in Jamaica, Queens, in a community that has historically been both highly criminalized for and rich with cultural knowledge surrounding cannabis.
