Gareth Pugh lights up London with his month-long festival takeover at Somerset House. See the best photos here:
Suddenly, there’s a rainbow-painted mini-stadium, a catwalk stage, and a ferris wheel in the courtyard of Somerset House in London. It’s all thanks to Gareth Pugh and Carson McColl, who last night exerted theirThe kaleidoscopic grassroots program Pugh and McColl are pulling off over this four-week ‘Major London Attraction’ will culminate in Somerset House’s very first Vogue Ball.
The inaugural night started with a dance performance directed by Wayne McGregor, with whom Pugh has collaborated over several years. It was followed by a mini-musical staged by the National Youth Theatre imagining Handel and Hendrix sharing a flat in Brook Street . Topping it off with a staggering vocal set by Ruth Brown, a gospel sensation who began to make her name by singing outside people’s homes during lockdown.
Looking down over the courtyard, they pointed out a line of Black-owned food booths curated by Black Eats LDN at the front of house, and cabanas where MAC, Bobbi Brown, Aveda, and Origins were dishing out free makeovers and product experiences. “Over there’s our Wonder Garden! It’s planted by Patrick Featherstone, who’s a young and queer gardener,” Pugh said. Just visible peeping from the undergrowth was a model of a giraffe and its pink-tinted baby.
On another turn of the wheel, we were looking over the Thames. Pugh pointed out a river cruiser docked by Waterloo Bridge. “That’s the Silver Sturgeon, where we got married after London fashion week in 2017!” The reason—partly—that Pugh was able to persuade the Somerset House arts charity to trust him with what’s to be a multi-year summer festival is that he’s one of the residents, occupying a studio in the warren of tunnels that run under the vast Neoclassical building.
