Gary Lineker knows what he is doing and the BBC should stop pandering to it ✒️ sarahsands100 for ipaperviews
‘It looks to me as if Gary Lineker knows what he is doing in this show of strength,’ writes Sarah Sands
Is it possible to maintain impartiality in an age of social media? The thunderous Reithian dictum inform, educate and entertain preceded the power of the personal brand. The BBC exists on a fault line between public service and the world of entertainment where “ talent” has the upper hand. Gary Lineker treads heavily on that fault line.I have been off Twitter for a while and have instead been working through the novels of Thomas Mann.
Many companies are wrestling with codes of conduct on use of social media and the issue is the rights of the private individual versus the collective endeavour. An easy test is: Does this personal tweet damage the standing of the organisation? Since Lineker is not whistleblowing it is hard to see how his tweet serves the public interest. And yes, it damages the impartiality of the BBC.
What Lineker can argue is that for him this is a matter of conscience. In the same way that politicians must put conscience before party he must put his belief in the treatment of refugees above all else. But he should also be prepared to make sacrifices to do this.
