Gary Martin, former E-N reporter, knew politics ‘better than most of the politicians’
Gary Martin, the friendly and tenacious Washington bureau chief who covered Congress for the Review-Journal, died Thursday in Las Vegas. He was 64. Martin was a long-time journalist at the San Antonio Express-News before heading to Las Vegas.SAN ANTONIO — Gary Martin, a former Express-News reporter admired for his tenacity and perceptiveness as well as his warmth and generosity, died Thursday in Las Vegas. He was 64.
“Gary was beloved and admired by everyone at the Review-Journal for his work ethic, professionalism, contagious smile and relentless cheerleading for his colleagues,” said Glenn Cook, executive editor of the Review-Journal. Martin, a fixture in the Washington press corps, covered both Gonzalez and his father, the late Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez, for the Express-News.
“He got people to trust him, but for the right reasons,” Gonzalez said. “Because he was respected. He was responsible. And he had all that insight and institutional knowledge.”
