Instead, they absorbed an 18th consecutive road loss and an NFL-record 17th straight setback to an NFC opponent. “We’re going to teach these guys and we’re going to show them exactly how to do that and this group is going to be better because of it.” While it was commendable the Jaguars recovered from a horribly inefficient first half — 10 red-zone plays producing minus-1 yard, kicker Riley Patterson missing a 37-yard field goal off the right upright — that did nothing to soothe the frustration of losing a game they could just have easily won by double digits.
“We spotted them 11 points in the first half and still found a way to fight back and have a chance to win,” said Lawrence. “If we can clean up all that, we’re going to be fine. I’m not worried. This is sometimes the price NFL teams have to pay with a new head coach, a new system and a lot of new faces playing together for the first time.
It wasn’t much consolation that Pederson chalked it up to a learning experience. When a franchise loses more games than any NFL team in the previous decade, nobody wants to hear about how you’re going to make amends. “You know a football game is going to have its ebbs and flows, but it’s how you bounce back from it. We were fighting to the end.”
