It's T-minus six weeks until the country goes to the polls.
Jeremy Corbyn made the announcement in a video posted to his X account Jeremy Corbyn has announced he will be standing as an independent candidate for his constituency in the 2024 General Election. There are a little under six weeks to go until the country goes to the polls for the first time since 2019. Most polls suggest Labour will sweep to power – but the fight may be feistier than usual in Islington North, where the ex-leader has decided to run for the seat he’s held since 1983.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak kick-started his whistlestop tour of the UK with stops in Derbyshire, south Wales and Scotland. Labour leader Keir Starmer, meanwhile, headed straight for the Tory heartland of south-east England where his party is hoping to make inroads. The two men will face off against each other alongside other party leaders at debates later in the campaign – but they probably won’t be weekly, as the PM has suggested.
