George Kolasa had Glioblastoma Multiforme, a rare brain cancer. After his diagnosis he raised nearly $500,000 for research and clinical trials with Cycle for Survival.
, George has set an ambitious goal to raise $1 million with Cycle For Survival. The next races are in April and May of 2023. If each of his 10K-plus followers donate or raise $100, he won’t just meet that goal, he’ll surpass it. These are George’s words.I left Burberry right before the pandemic. We drove out to East Hampton to stay there and figure things out. We said, “we’ll see what happens,” and then this happened. I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t and I still don’t.
I never put myself out there publicly in my career. My job was to communicate on behalf of a brand or designer. That was my main purpose, I kind of was old-school in that way. But then this happened and I realized that there seems to be something bigger out there for me. And, in order to get my message out there, I needed to go public on social media. So that’s what I’ve been doing. It all happened kind of spontaneously. My brother was here.
Anytime I’m asked, you know, how are you? I answer truthfully. It’s tough. Getting through the day is hard. But each day that I survive I feel grateful. I don’t know if I’m going to wake up tomorrow, but my instincts tell me that I will and I’m doing okay. I don’t get bogged down by it. I’m just trying to figure out how to live my life. And live it with brain cancer. It obviously shifts things. I don’t have the same life that I used to have.
So many other cancers get a lot of attention, and rightfully so, but the fact is that rare cancers make up half of all cancer diagnoses and there’s not a lot—and nowhere near enough—funding or research. Take Glioblastoma, which is the type of brain cancer I have. I’d never heard of it before. Most of our friends and family have never heard of it before.
