Erich Kirste lived on Merseyside for nearly 70 years
Originally from East Germany, grandad Erich Kirste was the last surviving resident of Huyton ’s wartime prison camp off Longview Lane. In 2019, Erich shared his story about how he joined the Air Force at just 17-years-old, but was later captured in Italy and taken to prison, where he would then be relocated all over the world.
Paying tribute, Erich's daughter, Norma Hallam said: "If Erich ever touched your life, you could never forget him with his brilliant smile and lovely little chuckle . What a character - he had nicknames for many people which did confuse us at times as to who he was talking about! "Moving into our first house, I remember he built a brilliant side gate for Andy and I and made an outside kennel for my cat to sleep in. I cannot thank you enough, Dad, for everything you have done for me, Diane, and Andy.
"When my grandad met my nana and got married, they bought their house that he still lived in 70 years later. He told me that he already knew that people would have preconceived opinions of him because he was a German prisoner of war and he would not give them any more reasons to dislike him, so he helped anyone he could - neighbours, friends, family, strangers.
