Will the Giants draft a quarterback in 2024?
The Giants — who also reportedly fear a torn ACL for Jones — are 2-7. They’re heading for a top five pick next year. Maybe No. 1 overall, given their current quarterback debacle?
Look, it was always possible that would’ve been the case even if Jones stayed healthy and played out 2023 in underwhelming fashion. We might never know. But rookie contracts are affordable enough that Schoen could carry Jones and a high draft pick quarterback on his 2024 salary cap. Pro Football Focus rates North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Oregon’s Bo Nix, and Penix as their second, third, and fourth quarterbacks, behind Williams. While Williams is first overall on PFF’s big board, Maye is third, Nix 19th, and Penix 21st. Those are the big names to watch.
Along those lines, Schoen did not draft Jones — and did not make a true long-term commitment to him with the contract he gave Jones this past offseason. Having Jones’ Year 3 guaranteed money not kick in until before 2025 was a huge move for Schoen. It’s also worth remembering that Schoen has extra draft ammo in 2024 — an additional second-round pick, from the Leonard Williams trade with Seattle last week. Schoen essentially paid $9.3 million for that pick, since he ate almost all of Williams’ remaining 2023 salary.
