riff, as secretly obsessed with its lead character’s specialness as it pretends to be amused by his inadequacies.is a sneaky vanity project, one that uses its alma mater revisit—all of a college campus’s teeming but tightly bordered potential—as a way not to explore the lead’s post-collegiate listlessness, but to show how smart he has always been.does not, thankfully, commit the same sin. Rey writes with wearier insight, and more subtlety, than that.
It’s the creeping sense that, sure, some ambitions have been dimly realized, but how honestly? From a distance, an achievement like publishing a novel might confer something socially, in certain circles. But up close—really, so close it’s maybe only felt internally—there is always the qualifying. Sure I did it, but it’s not very good. I didn’t work that hard on it. It’s not selling well. Or whatever the metric might be that creates a crater where an accomplishment is supposed to be.
The getting it, the doing it, is almost never as good as the wanting. Jacobs poignantly communicates that insistent itch, the dawning and evolving realization that life has less of a cumulative momentum than Kate imagined it would back in her heady, dreamy days in the college antechamber.
