When Nicola and Simon Barclay found out they were pregnant with their third child, they were over the moon. However, the parents were told their child had a serious heart defect.
A seven-year-old girl, who received treatment at Glasgow's flagship hospital, is just one of two children to be born with just half a heart.
"It was a strange shape and didn’t seem to have any chambers. The consultant I spoke to said he suspected it could be a hole in the heart, but he wanted to send me to Glasgow‘s Queen Elizabeth Hospital to make sure. “After a long discussion, we both felt we didn’t want to give up on our baby and wanted to leave it up to her to decide if she wanted to live, so we decided to continue with the pregnancy.”
The couple were informed only two hospitals might be willing to treat her – Great Ormond Street in London and Birmingham. With great Ormond Street turning Leah down, a leading paediatric heart specialist at Birmingham was prepared to offer Leah open heart surgery to be undertaken in three stages to give her the best chance of living as normal a life as possible.
Although the hospital wanted to keep Leah in for another year until her next open heart surgery, it was not a practical option for the family. Fortunately, the consultant agreed to discharge her on the condition that their Aberdeen home was as sterile as possible. “At home, Mia sleeps in the same room as Leah but at Rachel House, Mia can get her own room so she gets a break too without the sound of machines bleeping all night. We can also go out on day trips with Mia and Sasha while Leah is enjoying being looked after.
