Glasgow Live can now reveal that between 2019 and 2023 there has been a 45 per cent increase in the number of disease-carrying rodents reported to Glasgow City Council.
Glasgow 's rat population has soared over the last five years as cleansing workers are increasingly refusing to go to areas of the city over health fears.
Chris Mitchell, Glasgow’s GMB cleansing convenor, told Glasgow Live: "There has been a massive increase of rats in the city. I have been very vocal about what we are seeing. "Pest control are telling me that they don't have enough staff to effectively treat the problem. They don't have enough staff. "We have to warn the young guys to tuck their trousers into their boots when they go into bin sheds in the pitch black to avoid getting bitten.
