Dizzy Corner, also known as Boots Corner, was a popular spot in Glasgow for first dates and meetings, but also a place of heartbreak for those stood up. This nostalgic look at the corner of Union Street and Argyle Street explores its significance to generations of Glaswegians.

There are a handful of first-time experiences that always stick with you, no matter what—like your first kiss. Speaking of having a winch, or lumber (!) for those of a certain age, while there's countless places folk would meet pre-lockdown in the city for first dates , such as under the Central Station clock or at the Donald Dewar statue or outside the pictures, none will ever match the place which was known as 'Dissy' Corner.

The corner of Union Street and Argyle Street was home to a huge Boots The Chemist store, and handy as it was next to Central Station, it also had a big clock there to tell you how long you'd been standing about waiting for. The alternative nickname for the place, which some also referred to as 'Dizzy' Corner or 'Boots Corner', stemmed from the term ‘to give someone a dizzy’ - which meant to stand someone up. On Fridays the corner would be mobbed with young men and women looking out for their 'date' under the shelter of the Boots store, while on Saturdays it's said it would be even busier with people meeting folk they'd meet the night before. And yet it was also Glasgow's corner of the broken hearted, with some regarding it as 'Riddy Corner' due to the fact that some of the faces of the folk waiting would be beelin' from the embarrassment of their 'date' not turning up. It wouldn’t be too uncommon to spot a young girl greeting her eyes out, which gave rise to the often heard phrase out the mouths of mums and aunties of 'Never meet a lumber at Dizzy Corner'. And not just your lumber, for some Dizzy Corner was also the place to meet pals too, years before the advent of something called a mobile phone
