Delays reported at UK airports; rail companies and GP surgeries warn of cancellations as IT services hit worldwide
Passengers queueing at check-in desks at London Gatwick Airport, amid reports of widespread IT outages affecting airlines, broadcasters and banks Major television channels, GP surgeries, flights, train services and banks around the world have been hit by a tech breakdown, knocking systems offline.
This Friday is set to be the busiest day for UK flight departures so far this year, with over 3,214 departures alone – the highest number of daily departures since October 2019Scheduled departures across the weekend are also set to reach 93% of 2019 levels “Patients should attend appointments unless told otherwise. Only contact your GP if it’s urgent, and otherwise please use 111 online or call 111.”American Airlines – the world’s biggest by passenger numbers, carrying an average of 578,000 passengers a day – has told thethat no flights are being allowed to take off, and that it is in contact with all flights that are currently in the air.
Berlin airport temporarily halted all flights on Monday due to a technical fault, a spokesperson told Reuters on Friday, adding that though check-in services were up and running again, there would be delays throughout the day. A spokesperson for Zurich airport said it was not experiencing problems, but that flights to Berlin were cancelled because BER was not accepting incoming flights until 10am GMT.
In a statement, the tech giants said: “We have been made aware of an issue impacting virtual machines running Windows, running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent, which may encounter a bug check and get stuck in a restarting state.Sports clubs and broadcasters are among those affected by a worldwide IT outage.
“We have additional staff on hand to support and operations are continuing with manual systems. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for flight updates.”The Port of Dover has reported it is experiencing problems caused by the global IT outages. James Bore, a chartered security professional, said the Crowdstrike problems seemed to stem from a single faulty file.Mr Bore told the BBC: “It appears to be a faulty file, a driver file, which is being deployed as part of CrowdStrike Falcon.
“The problem is, because it’s the blue screen of death, you can’t actually just roll out another update to fix it. He said Azure does not deploy CrowdStrike Falcon, but it is available in Microsoft’s Cloud marketplace, which may explain the issues with Microsoft. He told the BBC: “But then there’s a second story emerging which is about an antivirus provider, a cyber security company called CrowdStrike, and its software update may also have caused issues for the end devices – so your phones, your laptops, your tablets, and particularly the types of screens you interact with.“These two incidents may be connected, they may not, but the two combined clearly caused absolute chaos.
GP practices who use the affected IT systems have said they can do very little and are unable to function as normal. Another post by Pocklington Group Practice in the East Riding of Yorkshire said: “Due to ongoing Windows issues affecting IT worldwide, the practice is currently unable to function as normal.
It said in an update that impacted services may include Microsoft Teams, Windows 365 and OneDrive for Business. “We are using our backup process, but some passengers may experience delays while checking in and passing through security.
