Heard on the Street: Lordstown, Ohio, is a battleground in the UAW strike against General Motors. In time, it could also become emblematic of a U.S.-China battery supply fight.
By Stephen Wilmot Sept. 30, 2019 6:56 am ET Lordstown, Ohio, is already a battleground in the United Automobile Workers strike against General Motors, which entered its third week Monday. In time, it also could become emblematic of a geopolitical fight for battery supplies between the U.S. and China.
Its offer to the union is in effect indicating that the auto maker could use its stake in a joint venture to bring union representation to a factory that otherwise probably wouldn’t have it. The Michigan plant at which LG Chem currently builds cells for GM’s Chevrolet Bolt electric car isn’t unionized. Nor is the Nevada “gigafactory” in which Tesla and Panasonic make battery cells for the Tesla Model 3.
Unionized or not, a cell plant part-owned by GM will be a milestone on Detroit’s road to electrification. A first wave of traditional car makers that invested in battery cell production too early, including Nissan and Mercedes-maker Daimler, found they were outcompeted by the likes of LG Chem. But now a second wave is breaking.
A Lordstown battery plant might actually please the U.S. president, who has taken a particular interest in the community’s fate on Twitter. While President Trump’s EPA has shown no interest in promoting electric vehicles, his State Department launched a plan in June to improve the U.S. battery supply chain.
