Many people have a preconceived image of a typical family caregiver—someone nearly retired with lots of free time. They also may assume that the person being cared for is always older or dealing with a visible illness or disability. The faces of today’s caregivers, however, are much more diverse.Michael Powell, 50, lives in Sun City West, Arizona, and cares for his 76-year-old mother, Julie, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Weeks was making a concerted effort to get her son involved in the community, including Special Olympics participation. The cancellation of those events and the advent of social distancing recommendations have complicated things. “Perhaps friends and family could either read books to your person, show them some new skill, draw, or just spend time chatting so that your child doesn’t feel so isolated,” Weeks said. “I know that my son particularly enjoys just the simple act of getting mail.”When Wayne Connell of Parker, Colorado, met his wife-to-be, Sherri, in 1992, she had already received a diagnosis of primary progressive multiple sclerosis and was no longer able to work.
