Google's AI chatbot was supposed to launch in the EU this week but stalled after regulators said the company did not provide adequate privacy documentation.
The Irish Data Protection Commission concluded that Google had not provided enough information related to privacy concerns ahead of the launch, and before it could be permitted in the EU, the commission said the software
must align with the Personal Data Protection law. The law, which was implemented in 2018, protects individuals from the release of their personal data with the exception of obtaining information for criminal activities and threats to public security.
However, a Google spokesperson told Gizmodo in an email, “We said in May that we wanted to make Bard more widely available, including in the European Union, and that we would do so responsibly, after engagement with experts, regulators, and policymakers.” The spokesperson continued, “As part of that process, we’ve been talking with privacy regulators to address their questions and hear feedback.
