Google's secret collection seems to be legal, but raises significant, wide-ranging privacy concerns
Google appears to have accessed detailed personal healthcare information about tens of millions of Americans—all without their knowledge. According to aMonday, the company’s Project Nightingale health initiative has amassed the complete medical histories of people in nearly two dozen states, all as part of an effort to create new software “that zeroes in on individual patients to suggest changes to their care.
Google has partnered with Ascension, a St. Louis-based healthcare non-profit operating 2,600 hospitals and doctors offices, to move the system’s patient records to Google Cloud. The partnership allows Ascension, the nation’s second-largest healthcare system, the ability to improve its record-keeping—and to mine data to “identify additional tests that could be necessary or other ways in which the system could generate more revenue from patients,” thereported.
“As the healthcare environment continues to rapidly evolve, we must transform to better meet the needs and expectations of those we serve as well as our own caregivers and healthcare providers,”. “Doing that will require the programmatic integration of new care models delivered through the digital platforms, applications and services that are part of the everyday experience of those we serve.”
All that sounds great, but it’s unlikely to allay concerns about one of the biggest Silicon Valley firms—one that’s already had some notable —secretly gaining access to millions of Americans’ most personal data, particularly without their knowledge. At least 150 Google employees have access to some or all of the data, according to the, and some Ascension employees have expressed concern “about the way the data is being collected and shared, both from a technological and ethical perspective.
