The company aims to avoid politically-charged search suggestions before November.
Thursday, Google VP of Search Pandu Nayak wrote the company’s new autocomplete policies would prevent suggestions that could be seen as a claim in favor of or against a specific party or candidate.
Google will also disable suggestions that users could interpret as declarations about voting in the election, like blanket statements about the security of the election, different voting methods and polling locations. For example, under the new terms, predictions like “you can vote by phone,” “you can't vote by phone,” or a suggestion to “donate to” a specific political candidate would be blocked, Nayak wrote.
Nayak was clear that even if a search phrase isn’t suggested by Google’s autocomplete feature, users can still search those terms and find information they’re looking for.“Information online is constantly changing—as are the things people search for—so continuing to deliver high-quality information is an area of ongoing investment,” Nayak wrote in the statement.
