Republicans and some industry groups are signaling they would oppose any effort from the Biden administration to use the threat of withholding federal funds to push some employers to mandate Covid vaccines

While multiple Republicans told POLITICO they would oppose withholding federal funds, other groups are signaling resistance, too. LeadingAge, the national association representing nonprofit aging services providers, said it’s strongly encouraging vaccine mandates, but would oppose enforcement tactics that could take away federal funding.

But some Democrats and other experts believe the move holds the potential to boost national vaccination rates, arguing that the federal government has the power and discretion to spend federal dollars and to set conditions for receiving funding. Hutchinson, the chair of the National Governors Association, said he’s skeptical of federal efforts that would include financial penalties.
